On Monday after exploring the Financial District in downtown Manhattan we headed for the Statue of Liberty. I had reserved tickets for 12pm for the pedestal area of the statue. I would have loved to go up to the crown but I guess you have to book about 3 months in advance to get tickets into the crown. It took us a little while to get through security but I think it was probably on the quicker end only about 20 minutes from line to the ship and I am sure it was much faster than most days. I think it was a good that we went on Monday.
The ferry ride took about 15-20 minutes and the ship was pretty crowded that was to be excepted when you are headed to a major NYC tourist attraction. Right after getting off the ship we walked around the island and in front of the statue and got some great views of Lady Liberty. Next we headed to the entrance to the statue so we could climb up to the Pedestal area of the statue which is the top of the brownish gray area of the base of the statue. (Did I explain that good enough.)
There was also the greatest view of the Manhattan skyline from the ferry. When I went to NYC three years ago we road the Staten Island ferry and it also had the best view from the ferry and it was free. So if you want an awesome view on the Manhattan skyline from the water take the free Staten Island ferry ride there and back.
After the Statue of Liberty we went to Ellis Island the ferry goes there before it goes back to Manhattan and while you don’t have to get off but we didn’t have any place to be so we got off and explored the island a little. We went to the family registry and tried to find our grandparents. I am pretty sure like 80% sure I found my great grandmother Lillian Peterson she came from Sweden in 1905. It was pretty cool and I have been trying to do some research and find out if it is really my great grandmother. (No luck yet.) It was a fun day and I am really glad we got to explore the Statue of Liberty. She is a beaut.
