North Carolina bucket list: 100 things to do in NC

I can't believe I haven't posted this yet! It has been sitting in my drafts, I guess just waiting for today. The 3 years we lived in North Carolina were some of the best years of my life. We spent our first years as a married couple there, we got our dog Knox in NC. I really do love the state of North Carolina! So what better way then to give you my recommendations for this do to. 65 of the things are things we did that I most likely wrote blog post about. Search under the North Carolina label and the other 35 things are things that I wish I could have done/ you should definitely do! Let me know how your adventures go.
1. Kitty Hawk, NC (Wright Brothers National Memorial): how could one visit North Carolina and not visit the place that NC is best known for (I mean it is on the NC licenses plates) FIRST IN FLIGHT.

2. Duck Donuts: One of the best little donut shops that was founded on the Outer Banks of NC. There are about 10 shops open now around North Carolina and Virginia. They make the donuts hot and fresh right in front of you and dip the frosting fresh and sprinkle the donuts.

3. Grandfather Mountain: This was one of the first state parks we visited in NC. We took a trip in October 2013 just a week after we got Knox to the mountains of North Carolina. The line was a little long to get into the state park but it was totally worth it. You get a CD to put into your player and you get to drive through the park while it tells you about the history and such. Even a scene in Forest Jump was filmed here.

4. Hanging Rock State Park

5. Fort Macon: I pronounced this wrong forever haha. It is a really good state park now that was involved in the Civil War and was in control of The South and then overtaken by The North.

6. Civil War battle fields: The first one I visited was Averasboro Civil War Battlefield near Dunn NC.

7. Cotton Field: These might be a bigger deal for me than other people. But coming from the Northwest of the USA I had never seen a cotton field in my life so if your like me go check them out!

8. South of the Border: so this is technically in South Carolina but it is right on the border. Hence the name. Definitely worth a visit. So kitschy!

9. Durham Bulls: If you haven’t seen the movie Bull Durham I highly recommend it. Then go to watch the Durham Bulls actually play baseball in Durham NC. We went once in the spring and then again for 4th of July.

10. Outer Banks: Home to most of the NC lighthouses which I love! Make sure to visit, Bodie Island Lighthouse, Cape Hattress Lighthouse, Currtick Lighthouse. Visit the Nights in Roadnathe House. Duck Donuts. Old fishing piers. Wild horses. Driving on the beach.

11. Jersey Mikes. Actually started in New Jersey but I had never eaten at one until I moved to NC. Life changer.. way better than Subway.

12. Carolina Ale House: A good restaurant chain that is mainly in NC and most of the locations even have karaoke.

13. Krispy Kreme. Yeah yeah I know they are everywhere but Krispy Kreme was actually founded in North Carolina.

14. Visit Fort Bragg. It is the largest military base in the world and home of the Airborne (soldiers that jump out of planes) You can get on base an civilian through the main All American Expressway gate. Just need your ID, car permit.

15. Downtown Wilmington. Wilmington is such a beauitful town. I recommend staying in downtown and walking to restuarants. It is also super dog friendly so bring the pup.

16. Kilwins: Ice Cream and Candy. This is a must eat place in Wilmington. There ice cream is so good and it smells like heaven inside. Usually there is a line out the door, but it moves fast and it is worth the wait.

17. Will’s Grill. This is a must eat place if you are in Fayetteville, NC! Great service and there signature pretzel bun burgers are so delicious.

18. Ocracoke Island beaches: my mom actually called me the other day to tell me she read an article that said Ocracoke Island is the 2nd best place in the United States to look for seashells. Unfortunately we were running behind and had to make a ferry and only had time to stop at the lighthouse and not comb the beaches :(

19. Cameo Art House Theatre. This is a movie theater located in Fayetteville NC. It is locally owned and totally awesome. It shows small movie that are lesser known but still totally great with big names. And they serve beer and wine at the theater so score.

20. Kalawi Farms and Ben’s Ice Cream. If you are on HWY 211 west of Pinehurst NC near Eagle Springs NC definitely store at this road side fruit and ice cream stand. In the summer it is open from 8am to 8pm but I would definitely recommend calling for specific phones.

21. Drive country roads to spot old grave site in corn and cotton fields.

22. Cape Lookout Lighthouse: One of the North Carolina lighthouses. You can only get to it by ferry or boat. It has a pretty black and white diamond pattern. The only thing on the island is the lighthouse and a little state park shop. You can camp on the island and beach for free!

23. Birthplace of Pepsi Cola: pretty self explanatory. The place were Pepsi was invented. You can even buy the original recipe there, made with real cane sugar!

24. Know the speed limit. While everyone seems to drive 10-15 mph over the speed limit (yep, you read that right). Make sure you know it and don’t get pulled over because the NC traffic violation laws are pretty strict!

25. Carolina Beach State Park: One of the only places that the Venus fly trap grows in nature.

26. Kure Beach fishing pier: This was actually the first fishing pier on the Atlantic coast which I just think it totally rad. You do need a permit to fish on it but you can walk on it for free there is usually a friendly pelican out there.

27. Brits Donuts: Such a good donut place. They are comparable to Krispy Kreme originals but better. Get a few and eat them hot.

28. Cheerwine: This is a cola drink that was founded in NC and is very popular in the area. I haven't seen it many places but North Carolina. But it is sort of like a cherry Dr. Pepper. Its pretty good.

29. North Carolina Zoo: One of the best zoos I have ever been too. You can even feed giraffes lettuce for only an extra $1 (cash only). The habitats are all well taken care of.

30. Duke University: The campus has to much to offer. There are museums, gardens and world class sports teams to watch and an AMAZING chapel! The architecture alone is stunning. It is a very cool school with lots of history.

31. Chapel Hill: Okay the towns of Chapel Hill and Carasboro are so darn cute! They have tons of cute little shops and local restaurants the two towns basically fun into each other and you can’t tell where one ends and the other beginnigs. Go to Sutton’s drug store if you are in town and get a milkshake and crinkle fries! Also take photos by all the cool murals on the buildings so many cool murals.

32. Carolina Tiger Rescue: This tiger rescue is in Pittsboro NC. And it is awesome. They rescue tigers, lions and other exotic cats from captivity here in NC. They have also rescued cats from poor conditions in zoos across the south. They have a great facility and a very well informed staff.

33. Carolina Panthers : In 2015 the Carolina Panthers had the longest undefeated season of anyone in the NFL! The crowd at Bank of America Stadium is amazing and in such a pretty city!

34. Buca Di Beppos: So this is a chain restaurant. If there is one in your city/ state ignore this one. But there is only one in all of NC and I had missed it because in Seattle we used to go all the time. So it was fun to go again. It is an amazing Italian restaurant with sharing sizes! YUMMMMM.

35. Uptown Charlotte NC: so in Charlotte they call there downtown uptown. Just to clear that up. Beautiful city with lots to do. There is a beautiful view from Marshall Park of all the skyscrapers in Charlotte.

36. Crowders Mountain State Park / King's Pinnacle: King's Pinnacle is one of the peaks at Crowders Mountain State Park. It is a 4 mile hike to the top and back from the parks visitors center and totally worth it. Bring water though and a camera because the view from the top is outstanding.

37. Drive to Myrtle Beach: So technically not in North Carolina but Myrtle Beach SC is so close and it is a fun town with lots of tourist things! Mini golf, aquarium, boardwalk, gift shops, candy shops, lots and lots of kitschy stuff!

38. Southport NC: Southport is the town that the book and movie Safe Haven (Nicholas Sparks) is set. It is very pretty and we even got to see Alex's House and the dock were Katy worked. The town is so cute and very walkable.

39: Bald Head Island / Lighthouse: This is a cool lighthouse and island! There are no cars on the island but there are golf carts. You can walk to almost anywhere. It is kind of expensive to get out to the island, a round trip ticket is $23.00

40: Visit all the covered bridges. I love covered bridges they are a still standing part of history and we don't really have them in WA so it was fun to find all the covered bridges in NC.
-Gaddy Covered Bridge

41. Morrow Mountain State Park: in central NC. Not the biggest mountains ever but fun little trip especially in the fall when the leaves are changing.

42: North Carolina State Fair: the state fair is awesome and huge! If you go on the weekend like we did there will be LOTS of people. Don't forget to get your free hushpuppies!

43: Watch airplanes: Charlotte airport overlook, its free and has picnic tables and parking sports just to watch the planes.

44: Dusty Donuts food truck: These are amazing little cinnamon sugar donuts. You can get different stuff on them. It is a food truck that is mainly around the Raleigh, Durham area but they come down to Fayetteville occasionally. So yummy. You can find them online and twitter for there current food truck stops and events.

45: If your into sports go see Michael Jordan's childhood home and high school in Wilmington NC.

46: Ocean Isle Beach: A cute little beach town in the south of NC, we even found whole sand dollars on the beach.

47. Currituck Beach Light: This is the most northern lighthouse in North Carolina and in Corolla NC! This was the last one I saw and if you drive like 1 mile past the lighthouse on the main road, the road just ends and turns into sand and you can drive on the beach if you have 4 wheel drive.

48: Wild Horses: Corolla NC or the Shattleford Banks: I never actually got to see the wild horses but there are tours on the Outer Banks and they live wildly on the wildlife reserves here in NC.

49. Jockey Ridge State Park: This state park is home to the largest natural sand dunes in the eastern USA. They are huge and so cool. People fly kites at this state park and also go sledding on the sand dunes.

50. Men's Duke Basketball Game: I was lucky enough to attend one of these when my dad and family came down. They got tickets for the family and it was so awesome! It was the best energy ever and if you can afford it I would totally recommend it. Even the seats way up high are worth it.

51. Pinehurst #2: A nice golf course and resort that is located in Pinehurst NC. The US Open is often held at this golf course.

52. Cook Out: A fun fast-food chain that is located in the southeast USA. They have super good hushpuppies and 40 flavors of milkshakes!

53: Raven Rock State Park: A fun state park located in Lillington NC. There are tons of trails and picnic tables and it is located on the Cape Fear River so there are places to swim and fish as well.

54: Lighting Bugs: We actually didn't see any lightning bugs until summer of 2015 so two years after living here. Also it should be noted that here in the south people call them lightning bugs and not fireflies.

55: North Carolina BBQ: There are two types of BBQ in NC. Western and eastern one is sweet and one is more vinegary. I like the more sweet one. Also, southern BBQ is the best BBQ. I am gonna resist order BBQ anywhere else in the US.

56: Strawberry picking: There are great places to strawberry pick in the sandhills of NC in the spring.

57: Golfing: There are so many golf courses in North Carolina and if you want to travel an extra hour, South Carolina too. And with the mild weather here you can basically golf year around. They have some of the best courses here in NC and SC and golfers come all over the world to golf here.

58: Lightning Bugs: aka fireflies but it should be noted that people in the south call them lightning bugs and never fireflies.

59: Civil War reattachment: We actually saw one in Savannah GA but they have them in North Carolina too and if you ever come to the south you should see one because they are definitely something different and interesting to do.

60: Blue Ridge Parkway: We traveled this in October 2013 and it was so beautiful during the fall. Definitely the perfect time to go. It is definitely a slow scenic drive.

61: North Carolina State Capitol: Located in Raleigh, NC. Very cool old building that you can tour and explore.

62: Wrightsville Beach: The closes beach to Wilmington NC and is usually packed during the summer! It has a great pier and is a fun little town.

63: Novelty Shell Station: A fun little roadside attraction! Here is my post all about it.

64: Old Salem: Located in Winston-Salem, NC. It is a historic district, it features a living history museum that interprets the restored Moravian community.

The best of Fayetteville, NC

Clark and I have lived in Fayetteville, North Carolina for three years now so I think it was the appropriate time to write a post the best of Fayetteville, NC. I know three years isn’t that long in some cases but I am the type of person that really tries to make the post out of every place they live or visit so I really do think I have had a good time here and can recommended things that the wide internet might not be able to tell you. So here is goes my guide to/ the best Fayetteville, NC. On another note, I think there are lots of places that I missed that are definitely worth visiting so this isn't a end all be all guide.

Food & Drink
- Will’s Grill: This place is a family owned and operated joint and have the best burgers! Make sure to order your burger with the famous pretzel bun (it’s their signature!)

- Lindy’s: This place is advertised as a spaghetti and pizza restaurant  but if you go to their Yelp reviews all anyone can talk about is there breakfast! Maybe they just don’t have time to get a new sign. But let me let you there breakfast is pretty darn good. Go on Saturday or Wednesday and get the S.O.S (Biscuits and Sausage gravy). Also they serve breakfast all day so don’t worry about sleeping in late on the weekend.

- The Coffee Scene: This place is a great little coffee joint with a really good atmosphere inside. So cozy and they even have a loft. People buy there coffee and study or work. Also they have gelato! Get the cookies and cream it’s delicious. They also have Krispy Kreme gelato although I will admit I haven’t tried it!

- Rude Awakening: we love this cute coffee shop downtown and it is our go to place for awesome fruit smoothies.

- Luigi’s: A really great Italian restaurant!

-Crazy Fire: is a Mongolian grill restaurant. Where you pick out your choice of meat and vegetables and the cooks grill/fry it up right in front of you. We have one of these back home in WA that is to die for and this one is pretty good to satisfy the craving.

-Shoguns: We had showguns with our good friends it’s a great hibachi restaurant. It’s on Ramsey Street and is really good. I recommend the steak hibachi dinner. Clark loves there sushi and you can even get there sushi rolls deep fried and Clark totally loves it that way. (All you have to do is ask.) You can also sit at a table and have them make the dinner right in front of you we just opted for the regular seating.

-Mash House: This is an American food restaurant, steaks, mashed potatoes, salads, sandwiches, burgers, etc. They even brew there own beer and rootbeer. I got the rootbeer float and it is great! I heard GREAT things about there blondie dessert and there onion rings and steaks are fantastic.

M & D’s: A great little pancake, waffle, and breakfast house! My friends loves it and wants to go like every single morning on the weekends haha. I think they like it so much because you get SO MUCH food with just one order.

Mary Bill’s: I personally haven't been to this restaurant but a lot of our friends have and it has wonderful reviews.
Things to do
- Airborne Special Operations Museum: we have only been here once and it was one of the first things we did when we moved to Fayetteville. It is a really cool museum and I know they have new exhibits about every month.

-Caver Falls: so this little awesome waterfall is actually on the ziplining property. We having done the ziplinning before but we did hike to the waterfall and it was so pretty. We did see a snake in the water and that is about the time we left. I cannot handle the water snakes here in NC, ugh. haha

-Cape Fear Regional Theater: A theater that puts on live plays and musicals. Here is a post about when we went and saw Spamalot.

- Cameo Art House Theater: This is a great little local theater in downtown Fayetteville. They play indie alternative movies and you can even order beer and wine while you watch your movie. They have really comfy seats and a great atmosphere.

- Lake Rim: In western Fayetteville toward Raeford NC. There is a fishing dock and some awesome trails and on the far side of the lake there are houses. You can't walk around the hole lake which is unfortunate but it is a big lake so it would take a while to walk around it anyways.

- Downtown / Market House: The market house is definitely what the Space Needle is to Seattle. If you see a postcard from Fayetteville it usually has the Market House on it which is in the round about in the middle of downtown. It is actually a place where they use to sell slaves which is a weird bit of history. During special events the upstairs museum is open to go into.

- Gillis Hill Farm: A family farm that sells pumpkins in the fall and has a corn maze. They also have a little market during harvest season to sell other produce and they sell homemade ice cream year around!

- Clark Park/ Cape Fear River Trail: This is a trail that is 5.3 miles one way so it is a very long trail that can be enjoyed. It goes along the Cape Fear River and has bathrooms along the way and even water stations.

- The Climbing Place: This is a rock climbing place that is pretty fun. They have belaying or free climb. We have only free climbed here because you have to do a little class to belay but I don’t think it’s that long.

-Fayetteville FireAntz: They aren't the best hockey team in the world but a little fun sporting outing is a good time once in a while. They play at the crown colosseum by the Fayetteville airport.

-Just Claying Around: This is a paint ceramic place that is awesome. They have all sorts of ceramics to paint and so many colors. Reasonable priced.  And you get your pieces back within a week, fired and done.

-Arsenal Park: a post about time at the park.

-1897 Poe House: read more about the Poe House here!

- Putt Putt Fun Center: Such an awesome place to putt putt, there are batting cages, go carts, and an arcade.

-Fort Bragg: For Bragg is the largest military installation in the world and has lots to offer actually. Golf courses, ice skating rink, museums, bowling, lakes, etc. Also, just driving around and seeing all the soldiers at work is pretty cool.

Things to see
-The wisteria in the spring
-Babe Ruth marker (where he hit his first home run)
-The mini Eiffel Tower in Fayetteville.
- Gilchrist Bridge, this is a cool little old bridge near Raeford.

Events
- Cumberland County Fair
- Dogwood Festival
- Dickens Christmas
- Zombie Walk
- Christmas in the Park
- International Folk Festival

Misc:
-The Krispy Kreme in Fayetteville has a really cool old vintage sign.
- There are some really cool murals/ painted walls in Fayetteville.
- There is a small version of the Effiel Tower here.
- This road side market is the best. Beautiful flowers in the spring/summer. Pumpkins in the fall and trees during Christmas.

A little ways away.
- Antique Street Fair in Cameron NC
- Raven Rock State Park in Lillington NC
- Carver’s Creek State Park in Spring Lake NC
- Gross Farms Pumpking and Strawberry Picking
- Weymouth Woods
- Martin Park and 50 acre dog park

I think it's so fun to live in new places and really take advantage of that. Since we are a military family we will be moving around a lot and this was our first duty station. It was awesome to get to know a town in North Carolina and really make it feel like home. I can't wait to get to know more towns just like this one across the world and the USA.

Let me know if you have any recommendations to add to this list.

Cameron Antique Street Fair

On Saturday, we headed to Cameron NC to check out the spring antique street festival. We actually went to this street fair in the fall of 2014! We loved it and last year I missed it all together but this year I wanted to make sure we went. It was just as awesome as I remember from 2014, we got there around 10am which I was happy about because the later in the day it gets the more people show up. It is actually best to drive all the way though the town and park on that side because you don't have to pay and the walk to the street fair action isn't far. There is also tons of good food which we didn't really eat much of this time. But there were funnel cakes, snow cones, hot dogs, hamburgers, Chinese food, ice cream, etc.
We actually didn't buy anything this time but had fun looking around. Last time I was searching for Christmas gifts for my mom she has a novelty oil can collection but this time since we are moving to Italy in a couple months I didn't want to buy anything for myself. There was a lot of good stuff and lots of people! It was also a really pretty day out.
I have been super into shopping lately which is not so good for the bank account. I haven't even really been shopping for clothes. I will go to Ross or TJ Maxx looking for kitchen stuff I need/want for Italy and we need a bigger suitcase, another shower curtain set, and new sheets, etc. But then I will end up looking at the clothes section and finding some super cute things, like this dress, which I found at Ross. This jacket is also new, I went to Old Navy looking for a swimsuit (it was buy one get one free the other day) and I had to look at the clearance section and found this awesome jacket. It was gonna be $15 but then they rang it up and it was $4.47 seriously such a steal! And I love it because its so cute and different. When it is zipped all the way up its a turtle neck!

Strawberry picking

Hey all, how is your Monday going? We went strawberry picking over the weekend to Douglas Strawberry Patch. I was actually driving up to Pittsboro NC so drop off a mug wholesale order to a shop there and on the way back I went back Gross Farms that has strawberries (and we go pumpkin pitching there each year) but a couple miles past I saw Douglas Strawberry Patch and it was small and cute and I looked them up online and the price was $9 per gallon to pick your own strawberries which was better than Gross Farms. Besides I wanted to go some place different.
There was a few other families there but it wasn't to busy. And it was the perfect timing to go because there was so many strawberries that were ripe and we didn't even have to look far to find the biggest juiciest strawberries! I was trying to pick strawberries of all sizes but Clark only wanted the biggest and best strawberries! On Saturday evening we went over to our friend house and brought some of the strawberries with us and they thought they were so good as well.
This is actually my first time ever strawberry picking. I wanted to do it last year but by the time I looked into it it was the end of the season and we didn't really have strawberry farms in eastern Washington state were I grew up. I am glad I wore my boots and convinced Clark to wear his old shoes because it was a little muddy. I figured it would be since the day before it rained off and on. I can't wait to finish eating all the delicious strawberries in our fridge!

Muddy River

So a couple weekends ago we headed to Raven Rock State Park and wanted to walk to the trail down to the fish traps. We have done this a few times in the past, each time in the summer. We wanted to let Knox run around and maybe play in the water a little bit because it was around 70 degrees out. But we didn't take into consideration that the river would be higher because it was winter. So once we got down there the river was really high and muddy and all the rocks we climbed on last summer were covered with fast moving water. But that is okay. It was still a really fun outing and we even climbed out on a long tree branch. As you know can tell Clark was way more comfortable then me haha.

The last of the OBX (+ a video)

Just a few last photos from the OBX. We ended up watching the sunrise in the morning. The main reason was because I was up most of the night because Knox kept barking! About every hour he would bark and wake me up. He was just nervous about being in a new place and hearing strange noises. Who can blame him? Haha. I would be a little nervous to but I was to busy comforting my dog. The sunrise was at 6:30 so we headed outside around 6am and there was quiet a few others on the beach that early. And it was probably because the sunrise was SO BEAUTIFUL. There was only around 10-15 people on the beach but that was the most we saw at any point on the beach at one time.
After, we watched the sunrise we went back into the hotel and I tried to rest for a while. Around 9am we went back on the beach and played and played and played! It was so much fun and Knox had the best time. You should watch the video below to see a fun video of Knox having the best time ever! We also found some awesome shells. Although, I brought them home and bleached them but the seashells still smell or one still smells but I can't figure out which one it is.
A rare photo of Knox actually sleeping at one point during the night at our hotel haha
I have a really good time taking videos and putting them together in iMovie. It is something really fun for me to do and keep me busy. Now I just want to go on more trips or vacations or adventures to film some things! Although I don't want to film constantly and not live in the present but it is a creative joy for me.

If you want to see Knox in video having the best time, this is the video for you haha.

Jockey's Ridge State Park + Duck Donuts

This might have been my favorite thing we did on the Outer Banks. I was actually thinking about not going because I didn't get much sleep the night before from Knox barking a lot at people walking by. This was the last stop we were going to make before heading home on Tuesday but then I was like ugh I don't know if it will be worth it. But I am so glad I stopped and it was totally worth it! The park was much bigger than I expected and there was no one in sight in the park but me and Knox. I know there were others there because of the cars in the parking lot.
At first you just walk into the trees and follow the signs to the sand dunes. You walk for a while and you will see a bunch of foot prints going up a hill. So I followed those and they lead me to these awesome dunes. There was no one else up there and so I let Knox off the leash and we ran and ran! As seen in the video from yesterday. After a little bit I saw some people in the far distance coming up the hill so I put Knox back on the leash and we went to the fair said of the sand dunes and sat so that way we weren't in the peoples way.
Unfortunately instead of making a bee line toward the dunes they came right by us and then over. It was unfortunate because Knox got really excited when the little kids came near and the moms were talking really loud saying "that is a crazy dog. don't go near him." obviously I didn't want there kids near us but I was mad that the parents were talking shit and I moved out of your way and they walked right near us anyways. It was dumb. Especially since they went to where I thought they would go in the first place.  Moral of the story don't talk shit about my people or dogs or anyone I love.
We also went to Duck Donuts in Kill Devil Hill because no trip to the Outer Banks is complete without a trip to Duck Donuts. Duck Donuts was founded in Duck NC. They make such good donuts. The fry them up fresh right in front of you and then dip them in the chocolate and sprinkle the toppings on. It is so yummy! I really love the warm cinnamon sugar donuts and if you heat them up for 8-10 seconds in the microwave it's like they came out hot and fresh just like they do when you first buy them. The Outer Banks of NC are really a special place and you should totally visit if you ever get the chance.
